Το "The Arrival" του Shaun Tan ήταν απλά μαγικό όπως επίσης και το "Tales from Outer Suburbia". To "The Bird King" θα το πρότεινα κυρίως σε όσους είναι fans του δημιουργού καθώς δεν θεωρώ ότι τα sketchbooks είναι ευκαιρία για να γνωρίσει κανείς έναν καλλιτέχνη. Ωστόσο οι "πιστοί" είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα μείνουν ικανοποιημένοι και από το artwork αλλά και από την τιμή της συγκεκριμένης έκδοσης.

Otomo Katsuhiro is one of the most respected and influential Japanese artists/storytellers in the history of modern comics. He has also worked extensively in animation including his own, hugely successful adaptation of his epic manga, Akira, which is widely considered to be a pinnacle of the form. This book is a catalogue for his first major exhibition, GENGA, which contains full-size illustrations of all the works featured in the exhibition, as well as preliminary sketches, production drawings, and the domestic advertising pieces that are rarely seen outside of Japan.

Δεν υπάρχει το πόσο ενθουσιασμό μου προκάλεσε η ανακοίνωση αυτής της έκδοσης. Το συγκεκριμένο artbook θα είναι τεράστιο (περίπου 36Χ26 εκατοστά), με σκληρό εξώφυλλο, και επιτέλους, στα αγγλικά. Η ίδια εκδοτική κυκλοφόρησε αυτό το artbook στην Ιαπωνική γλώσσα το καλοκαίρι που μας πέρασε, ως κατάλογο για την ομώνυμη αναδρομική έκθεση του δημιουργού του AKIRA. Όποιος θέλει μπορεί να το αγοράσει αυτή τη στιγμή από το Book Depository προς 42 ΜΟΝΟ ευρώ (αλλά στα Ιαπωνικά και με μαλακό εξώφυλλο) ή να περιμένει (όπως κι εγώ) για την αγγλική έκδοση με το χοντρό εξώφυλλο (φαντάζομαι για κανά 10ευρω παραπάνω).

Αρκετά μέτριο σενάριο θα πρέπει να πώ. Ωστόσο ορισμένες φορές δεν πρέπει να αντιστέκεται κανείς στο κάλεσμα ενός ονόματος όπως αυτό του Moebius. Όπως συμβαίνει και σε άλλες παρόμοιες περιπτώσεις (βλ. X-Women από Manara) είναι άξια προσοχής η δουλειά ενός τρισμέγιστου καλλιτέχνη πάνω σε έναν corporate χαρακτήρα.

Είδα αυτόν τον τόμο και με έπιασε μια νοσταλγία για CLAMP. Θυμάμαι τον εαυτό μου πριν καμιά δεκαριά χρόνια να διαβάζω μανιωδώς το μάνγκα Χ/1999 και να βλέπω την animated εκδοχή του με εξίσου μεγάλη πόρωση. Πρίν ένα-δυο χρόνια είδα και το OVA του Tokyo Babylon που θεωρείται prequel του Χ. Η ατμόσφαιρα του άνιμε με ενθουσίασε, το σενάριο όμως όχι και τόσο πολύ. Είμαι σίγουρος πάντως ότι το στόρυ του μάνγκα θα είναι πολύ καλύτερο.

Απ'όσο έχω καταλάβει οι απόψεις διίστανται για το σχεδιαστικό στυλ του Pope. Υπάρχουν πολλοί που δεν τους αρέσει καθόλου και οι υπάρχουν (πολλοί) περισσότεροι που τον λατρεύουν. Εγώ προσωπικά ανήκω στους δεύτερους και το έχω προπαραγγείλει ήδη. Για το σενάριο δεν μπορώ να σας πώ τίποτα με σιγουριά· αυτό που κάνει τη μεγάλη διαφορά με τον Pope είναι το artwork.

Είχαν ανακοινώσει εδώ και αρκετούς μήνες τη κυκλοφορία αυτού του τόμου και είχα αρχήσει να χάνω τις ελπίδες μου ότι θα εκδοθεί. Το αυτοκόλλητο όμως που βλέπω στο καινούργιο αυτό εξώφυλλο με κάνει να πιστεύω ότι το PDF της Jodelle βρίσκεται ήδη στους υπολογιστές, αν όχι στις πρέσες, του τυπογραφείου.

Όπως καταλαβαίνετε και από τον τίτλο της έκδοσης, είναι αφιερωμένη στα κόμικς του Krigstein από τα μέσα του αιώνα που μας πέρασε. Σας συνιστώ άμα δεν τον γνωρίζετε να τον ψάξετε λιγάκι στο ίντερνετ καθώς αυτός ο τόμος είναι πολύ καλή ευκαιρία να τον μάθετε (σε αντίθεση να σας θυμίσω με το Bird King και τον Tan λίγο παραπάνω).
Η μακέτα του εξώφυλλου μου φαίνεται τραγική, αλλά είμαι 99% σίγουρος ότι η Fantagraphics θα την αλλάξει.

Για όσους δεν το γνωρίζουν ήδη, η Diamond Comic Distributors είναι ο μεγαλύτερος προμηθευτής (χονδρέμπορας) των εξειδικευμένων καταστημάτων με κόμικς στα αγγλικά. Μέσα από τον κατάλογο Previews της εν λόγω εταιρείας, τα καταστήματα λιανικής έχουν τη δυνατότητα να προπαραγγείλουν προιόντα που θα κυκλοφορήσουν στην αγορά δύο μήνες αργότερα (σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις μπορεί και παραπάνω). Ο κατάλογος έχει συνήθως γύρω στις 400 σελίδες και συνοδεύεται από έναν δεύτερο κατάλογο 100 σελίδων αποκλειστικά για τα προϊόντα της Marvel Comics.
Οποιοδήποτε ελληνικό κατάστημα με κόμικς κι αν επισκεφθείτε (δείτε τη λίστα στα δεξιά), θα μπορέσετε είτε να αγοράσετε το συγκεκριμένο κατάλογο (5 ευρώ περίπου) είτε να τον ξεφυλλίσετε στο κατάστημα, και αν βρείτε κάτι που σας ενδιαφέρει να το παραγγείλετε.
